Orton-Gillingham (OG) Tutoring

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a structured, multisensory, and sequential way to teach reading and writing skills. Students learn at their own pace, continually reviewing each new concept to ensure mastery.  Multisensory learning is emphasized and is a part of each new learning activity. By using the senses, such as seeing, hearing, moving and feeling, new information is easier to retrieve and becomes automatic, which strengthens the learning process.

As well, OG tutoring is individualized to the learner’s needs, with regular evaluations to direct the teaching focus. The lessons are structured and sequential, so that the student progresses from simple to more complex tasks.  For example, letters and sound units are studied and practiced during lessons, which lead to blending activities that require learners to synthesize sounds into words and sentences. Concepts are taught directly to ensure a clear understanding, and each lesson builds upon previously learned material, ensuring students have a solid grasp of concepts before moving on. OG tutoring lessons include essential literacy topics such as phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, sight words (i.e. non-phonetic), syllabication, vocabulary, fluency, penmanship skills and reading comprehension. The OG approach teaches reading by following the evidence and research behind the Science of Reading

OG tutoring is beneficial when reading, writing, and spelling do not come easily to individuals, such as those with Dyslexia. It is a Structured Literacy approach that is endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association
